What is the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP)?

The Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening therapy developed by dr. Stephen Porges, and based on the Polyvagal theory. This method helps with calming the nervous system and improves social connection through special filtered music.

The SSP trains the inner ear to better distinguish frequencies related to human voices which stimulates safety and connection. This means that this therapy is efficient against stress, anxiety, trauma en sensory overload.

At NeuroVP, Philippe Pascal offers SSP bothonline and in person. It is not a standalone therapy, but a supportive tool used alongside other treatments.

How does the Safe & Sound Protocol work?

The Safe & Sound Protocol targets the autonomis nervous system, the part of us that decides whether we feel safe and relaxed or stressed and on high alert. When someone experiences long-term stress, trauma, or neurodiverse challenges (such as AD(H)D, autism and anxiety disorders) the nervous system can get stuck in a constant state of vigilance. This often leads to sensory overload and difficulty connecting with others socially.

The neurological basis of the SSP

  • Trains the middle ear: The SSP uses specially processed music with varying frequencies to train the middle ear to better recognize signals of safety and social connection.
  • Nervous system regulation: The auditory input stimulates the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in relaxation and emotional regulation.
  • Improves social engagement: By strengthening the connection between hearing and the nervous system, SSP can help make sensory processing and social interactions feel more natural and effortless.

The training program consists of 5 hours of listening therapy, divided into multiple listening sessions.

The advantages of the SSP

The SSP supprots stress regulation, social engagement, and cognitive function. It helps calm the nervous system, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. People with autism, AD(H)D or sensory sensitivities often experience improved sensory processing. Concentratie and focus can also increase, which is especially helpful for learning difficulties and attention disorders. The SSP also promotes emotional resilience, deeper relaxation and more regular sleep patterns. Social interactions become easier as the brain processes social cues more effectively. Many people notice a positive and lasting effect in their emotional balance within just a few weeks.

Who can benefit from the SSP?

The SSP is effective for both children and adults who struggle with stress regulation, sensory overload, or social connection. It is used to support recovery from stress, burnout, anxiety, and trauma (including PTSD). People with ADHD, autism, or sensory sensitivities can also benefit. In addition, the SSP can help with low mood, emotional blocks, and difficulties in social interaction.
